Of course it’s hard
Publishing fiction is like breaking into show business. Not everybody who wants it can break into publication. Not everybody is good enough to succeed. Sending queries to agents and editors looks an awful lot like hunting for a new job, but it’s a necessary part of this business. The bottom line with selling a manuscript to a publisher is the question: will people pay good money to read this?
Why am I doing this?
A long time ago, I realized that I could write as well as a lot of what I was reading, sometimes better than what I saw on the page. For over three decades I’ve been in writing workshops and studied the little detailed things that go into writing good fiction and nonfiction. I’ve published technical articles and personal essays, and I want to see my fiction make it into print. I’m looking to build an audience of perfect strangers. Like what you see here? This space’s community
This Substack community is readers and those who enjoy a good story. If I’m getting it right and writing good stories, the reading and subscriber numbers will prove it out. If not, this site will just occupy a piece of cyberspace like a bad billboard. Part of it rests with you the reader and telling friends about this space and the stories inside if you like what you find. Let me know if I’m getting it right, or what’s wrong.
What you’ll find here
I’m looking to post new material weekly, and I’m still learning the site software. The site’s appearance may change a little as I figure things out. With a foot locker full of older short stories, I’ll work from that stockpile, as well as test driving new stories and novel chapters as I finish them. What shows up here will already be workshopped first through a group I’ve been attending for seventeen years. What shows up here has been polished and edited as best as I can, as if I’m submitting to an editor or agent, and this is starting off as a free site to test the waters.
